An Astronomical Awakening: The Rebirth of Chanel by Matthieu Blazy

Grand Palais, Paris, France: As I entered the Grand Palais, Paris’ loud streets and bright sky suddenly faded. Entering the Grand Palais, a building that has been transformed into what seemed to be an endless universe. With large glowing orbs that resembled our planets, and cameras flashing, almost seeming like the stars of a night sky. Chanel’s Spring Summer 2026 launched me, and everyone in that room, into space without a rocket.

It was a big night for Chanel. A new era is beginning at the hands of someone new, someone who Chanel knew was serious, reliable, and respected heritage and craftsmanship, Matthieu Blazy. The first external inductee since Karl Lagerfeld in 1983. Every editor, buyer, photographer, and person in that room was waiting eagerly for the very last and most anticipated night of Paris Fashion Week. Was Matthieu Blazy going to meet the standard of the very loved and sacred House of Chanel?

Coco Chanel's vision for Chanel has always been luxury, simplicity, creativity, elegance, and timelessness. Matthieu Blazy's Chanel featured pieces that are meant to be worn, a true embodiment of the legacy the house was meant to have. Pieces with movement, texture, color, exaggerated silhouettes, and exactly the opposite. Something for every woman.

As the lights dimmed deeper, and the first beat of music began to play, the models made their way out and around the universe. The first, his debut, a wool suit. Simple.

Some were clothed in the staples we are familiar with, tweed, A-line skirts, and blazers, but it felt like more. Taking what we knew and making it richer, the things we've seen came in new forms. The tweed was frayed and unraveled, Chanel camellias transformed their clean-cut petals into what looks like an explosion, closer to a dahlia.

Long trains began to come out, covered in feathers that moved with every step.

Accessories, feather headpieces, multicolored shoes, stamped and carved chains. There were bags with seams exposed and creases in the leather, which seemed to be a representation of heritage. Yet there were others, with bold lines and sharp edges. Some units held the soul of those that came before it, other pieces twinkled like a starry sky. A lot of that was worn did something without doing anything at all. Luxurious, creative, elegant, timeless.

Art comes in different forms, and creativity is translated in different ways. The difference between a creative and an artist, is that one will show you their idea and the other will make you feel it. Matthieu Blazy, artist, creator, innovator.
